Snohomish is a city in Snohomish County, Washington. The city is bordered by the Snohomish River to the north, the Pilchuck River to the east, and Lake Washington to the south. It is home to a population of over 10,000 residents and is a hub of local commerce and industry.
The city was named for Chief Snohomish of the Duwamish tribe. It was incorporated on June 6th, 1889 by an act of the Washington Territorial Legislature from seven townships: Ballard Township (northwest corner), Clear Lake Township (southwest corner), Maytown Township (northeast corner), Monroe Township (east side), Nooksack Townsite (east side), Stevensville Townsite (south side), and Trafton Townsite (west side). In 1890 it became a city when its population reached 534 people.
Snohomish is best known for its historic downtown area, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The downtown area is marked by its preserved Victorian-style buildings, which house a variety of antique shops, restaurants, and other attractions. The city also features several parks and outdoor recreation areas, as well as an array of cultural and entertainment offerings.
The city's history goes back to 1858 when settlers began to arrive in the area around Puget Sound. Snohomish was founded in 1869 by Peter Ainsworth and his wife. Ainsworth named the city after his wife's nickname: "Snoho." In 1882, a post office was established in town and that same year saw its first wooden schoolhouse built on land donated by Andrew Jackson (Ainsworth's son-in-law).
In 1889, Snohomish was incorporated as a city; however it wasn't until 1908 that electricity came to Snohomish via Puget Sound Power & Light Company (now known as Puget Sound Energy).
Snohomish is home to a number of notable historical attractions, including the Blackman House Museum, a former home of early settlers in the area; the Snohomish County Historical Museum, which houses artifacts from the area’s past; and the Snohomish Carnegie Library, a former library built in 1904. The city also features a variety of unique shops and restaurants, including the historic Harvey's Hardware Store, which has been in business since the late 1800s.
